How much does a trap bar weigh? Hex bar weights

A trap bar has no single weight. Here is what makers print for theirs, in their own words, beside the 20 kg or 45 lb RIGOR assumes, and how the bar you enter decides which totals the app can make.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A trap bar weighs what its maker built it to weigh. The maker pages here print 45 lb, 47 lb, 55 lb and 60 lb, and Synergee sells bars named 7, 20 and 25 kg. RIGOR starts a trap or hex bar at 20 kg, or 45 lb in a pound gym, and lets you change it to your own.

How much does a trap bar weigh?

There is no one weight. A trap bar, also called a hex bar, weighs what its maker built it to weigh. The maker pages here print 45 lb, 47 lb, 55 lb and 60 lb for four bars, and Synergee names its three bars 7 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg. The figure for your bar is on its end cap, its manual or its maker's page.

RIGOR's gym setup starts a trap or hex bar at 20 kg in a kilogram gym and at 45 lb in a pound gym. That is a starting figure, not a measurement of any bar. The types of barbells page lists it beside the other bars.

What do makers say a hex bar weighs?

What makers print for their trap and hex bars
BarWhat the page printsConverted
Fringe Sport Hex BarBar weight 45 lb20.4 kg
Bells of Steel Open Trap BarWeighs 47 lb (21.3 kg)21.3 kg (maker)
Fringe Sport Midas Open Trap BarWeight 55lbs24.9 kg
Rogue TB-2 Trap BarProduct Weight 60 lb27.2 kg

Synergee Hex Trap Bar, 20kg versionNamed "20kg Hex Bar"44.1 lb
Synergee Hex Trap Bar, 25kg versionNamed "25kg Hex Bar"55.1 lb
Each figure is copied from the maker's page in sources, in the maker's word and unit. The other column is a conversion, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 kg = 2.20462 lb, rounded to one decimal; Bells of Steel prints both units itself. Makers whose pages did not load or printed no figure are not here.

Read it as seven bars from five pages. Synergee's page gives no separate weight line: the kilograms are in the names of its three versions, so they are the page's only weight figures. The figure on a page is for that model alone.

What is the hex bar weight in kg?

It depends on the bar. Converting the makers' pounds, 45 lb is 20.4 kg, 55 lb is 24.9 kg and 60 lb is 27.2 kg, and Bells of Steel prints 21.3 kg for its 47 lb bar. Synergee's versions are named in kilograms already: 7, 20 and 25 kg.

As a conversion, 45 lb is 45 × 0.45359237 = 20.4 kg, and 20 kg is 20 × 2.20462 = 44.1 lb. RIGOR's 20 kg default for a kilogram gym and its 45 lb default for a pound gym are two separate entries. The app keeps the lists apart and never converts one into the other.

How much does a trap bar weigh at the gym?

The pages here do not name the bars of any gym, so no gym figure is given. A gym's bar may be any of the models above or another one. Look for a figure on the end cap, then the maker's page or manual for the model. If neither has one, weigh the bar.

How do you set your own bar's weight?

Find the figure for your bar, then enter it where the app asks for the bar.

  1. Read the bar. End cap first, then the maker's page for the model.
  2. Set it in gym setup. The trap or hex bar item holds only its bar weight. The plates come from the gym's weight plates item.
  3. Or use the calculator. The plate calculator has a Bar weight field that takes any bar weight, so it works as a hex bar weight calculator for a 60 lb bar as well as a 45 lb one.

In the app the bar does two jobs. It sets the plates shown on each side of the bar, and it sets which totals can be made at all, because RIGOR's achievable loads are the bar plus any combination of plate pairs (training rules, section 8). A different bar moves every total on the list.

Loading 135 lb · three bars
45 lb bar: (135 − 45) ÷ 2 = 45 lb a side · 60 lb bar: (135 − 60) ÷ 2 = 37.5 lb a side · 47 lb bar: (135 − 47) ÷ 2 = 44 lb a side
With RIGOR's default pound plates (45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb), 45 lb a side is one 45 lb plate and 37.5 lb a side is 35 + 2.5. 44 lb a side cannot be made: the nearest per-side loads are 42.5 and 45 lb, which give totals of 47 + 85 = 132 lb and 47 + 90 = 137 lb. The same target is exact on two bars and out of reach on the third.

The sum is the same one as for any barbell, covered in plate math. Whether the bar is part of the number you lift is covered in does the bar count as weight. Curl bars have their own figures in EZ bar weight, and the plate sizes a bar takes are in weight plate sizes.

IN RIGOR

Set the trap bar once in gym setup

Gym setup starts the trap bar at 20 kg or 45 lb. If yours is a 60 lb Rogue TB-2, change it there, and both the plates the app shows and the totals it can plan follow that bar.

When does this not apply?

This page lists what makers printed and how RIGOR's gym setup and the plate calculator take a bar weight, so there is no training study to cite.

Questions

Is a trap bar 45 lb?

Some are. Fringe Sport's Hex Bar page prints 45 lb. Others print more: 47 lb for Bells of Steel, 55 lb for Fringe Sport's Midas and 60 lb for the Rogue TB-2.

How much does a trap bar weigh at the gym?

No page here names the bars of any gym, so none is given. Read the end cap or the maker's page for the model, or weigh the bar.

Yes. The plate calculator has a Bar weight field that takes any bar, so a 60 lb trap bar works as well as a 45 lb one.

Whether to include the bar in the number you log is a choice of bookkeeping. The page on whether the bar counts as weight sets it out, and RIGOR plans the total it adds the bar to.
